From the inception as full University status, University of Kotli Azad Jammu, and Kashmir (UOK) is striving hard to provide well equipped platform for scientific education and research. In the last few years UOK has progressed significantly in all aspects. Currently, faculty of sciences University of Kotli comprises of six departments such as Department of Botany, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology. Keeping the current needs of students after passing intermediate (pre-medical) the above-mentioned departments are not enough to cater the demands of hundreds of students in Kotli and its surrounding areas, So, in view of this there is a need of new department which can not only cater the demands of student’s admission but can also provide the opportunity to excel in real world for combating biological problems like COVID-19. In this regard, department of Biochemistry, aims to provide a stimulating and diverse research, which will fulfil the missing link among the current departments especially, biotechnology, botany, chemistry, and zoology.

The Department will pursue the research aims through up-to-date equipment and state-of-the-art technologies, the recruitment of high-calibre staff, maintenance of industrial contacts, and the fostering of close links and collaborations with international scientific community. The Department's research will be grouped under the headings of several broad programs including Clinical Biochemistry, Enzymology, Nutrition and Metabolism, Plant Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Molecular Biology of Human Diseases, Proteomics, Genomics and Cell Biology. Specialist research facilities currently available include Protein purification (HPLC) and characterization (UV/visible spectrophotometry, analytical ultracentrifugation), growth room, cell culture, DNA sequencing facility, and low temperature freezers.

Excellent research facilities and a research-oriented faculty will allow our department to offer broadly based programs of graduate and postgraduate study where students can acquire a thorough and diverse background in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Along with the most commonly available jobs in vicinity and nearby districts at private/government schools and colleges, biochemists will enjoy the job offerings from clinical labs, pharmaceutical industries, Research organizations (NHA), Food processing and food packaging, Food Quality manager, Quality assurance, Agriculture and agrochemical industries, Personal care products (cosmetics and perfume making industries).

F.Sc.(Pre-Medical) or equivalent with at least 45% marks.
